Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Shri Krishna. On mythological basis, Krishna is the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This festival falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapad month, hence it is called Janmashtami (or Krishna Janmashtami).
Some of the major ceremonies taking place on the day of Janmashtami are as follows.
Fasting: Devotees often observe a day-long fast.
Midnight Festival: The birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great enthusiasm at midnight. Devotees sing bhajans (devotional songs) and offer prayers.
Dahi Handi: “Dahi Handi” is organized in some parts of India, especially Maharashtra. A pot filled with curd is hung above the ground, and teams of youth (called “Govindas”) form a human pyramid to reach and break the pot. This festival literally symbolizes emulating the playful nature of Lord Krishna as a child.
Laddu Gopal Vigraha: Images or Vigrahas of Lord Krishna as an infant are dressed in elaborate clothes and placed in a cradle.
Religious events in temples: Special prayers and kirtans (devotional songs) are organized in temples.
Tableaus: Elaborate exhibitions depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, especially his childhood, are set up in temples and homes. These performances are known as "Jhanki".
