The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi evaluated the state of human resources across all government departments and ministries on Tuesday, mandating that ten lakh workers be hired in the next 18 months.
The prime minister’s review meeting comes more than two months after cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba told central government secretaries to take prompt efforts to fill current vacancies in ministries and departments, according to news agency PTI.
The prime minister had emphasised at his meeting with the secretaries on April 2 that employment should be the goal of all government activities in the public and private sectors. The cabinet secretary had written to the secretaries, requesting that they act quickly on the prime minister’s recommendation.
The government’s decision comes in the wake of repeated criticism from the opposition on the subject of unemployment. A considerable number of empty positions in various government sectors have frequently been highlighted.
