KS Eshwarappa, a Karnataka BJP lawmaker, reported the incident to the police after receiving a letter threatening him with having his tongue amputated if he continued to refer to Tipu Sultan as a “Muslim Gunda.” According to reports, the note was sent to his home.
Banners for Independence Day in Karnataka that featured Tipu Sultan and the Hindutva hero VD Savarkar sparked a dispute in the state. Mr. Eshwarappa claimed that he has never referred to all Muslims as “Gundas” and that he is unafraid of threats of this nature.
Senior BJP leader KS Eshwarappa charged minorities with inciting racial conflict in Shivamogga, Karnataka, on Tuesday. A gang of Tipu Sultan supporters allegedly tried to take down a Veer Savarkar poster that had been put up at Ameer Ahmed circle in honour of Independence Day. As a result, a curfew has been imposed in some areas of the Shivamogga district.

To quell the situation and scatter the mob, police used a gentle lathicharge. In a demonstration, the BJP and Hindu organisations demanded permission to display Savarkar’s image and action against the opposing group for defaming their symbol.
