In a heartbreaking incident, five Indian Army personnel lost their lives during a tank exercise in the Daulat Beg Oldie area of Ladakh. The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Saturday, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Nyoma-Chushul sector, when their attempt to cross a river went disastrously wrong.
According to defense officials, the soldiers were operating a T-72 tank, navigating across a river, when they were swept away by a sudden rise in water levels near Mandir Morh, approximately 148 kilometers from the main area. The accident happened around 1 am during a routine maneuver.
The Indian Army released a statement explaining that the military tank became lodged in the Shyok River near Saser Brangsa in Eastern Ladakh due to the unexpected surge in water levels. Despite immediate response efforts, the rescue teams were unable to save the soldiers due to the high current and elevated water levels.
“Rescue teams were unable to succeed due to the high current and water levels,” the Indian Army stated, highlighting the challenges faced during the rescue operation.
