Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar

Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar ((1725-1795) was the Holkar Queen of the Malwa kingdom. She is regarded as one of the most visionary female rulers of India. In the 18th century, as the Maharani of Malwa, she was instrumental in spreading the message of dharma and propagating industrialization. After the death of her husband in 1754, Ahilyabai took over the administration of the Indore state. She ruled for 30 years and is considered one of the most successful rulers of the Maratha Empire.

Ahilyabai was born in the village of Chaundi, near Pune, in 1725. Her father, Mankoji Rao Shinde, was a Maratha general. She was married to Khanderao Holkar, the son of Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of the Holkar dynasty.

In memory of this great female ruler, the Government of India issued commemorative stamps in 1966. Indore University and Indore Airport are named after her as Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Indore and Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport respectively.
