Biography of Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon
Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon was born on July 17, 1943 in Ludhiana district of Punjab. His father’s name was Tarlochan Singh Sekhon. Tarlochan Singh was an Honorary Flight Lieutenant in the Indian Air Force. Nirmaljit Singh’s mother’s name was Harbans Kaur.
Nirmaljit received his primary education from Ludhian. Subsequently, he took admission in Dayalbagh Engineering College, Agra but however he left the engineering course midway and joined the Indian Air Force. He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a pilot officer on June 4, 1967. During the India-Pakistan war of 1971, he was working in “The Flying Bullet” 18th Squadron of the Indian Air Force.
Martyrdom in the India-Pakistan war of 1971
On 14 December 1971, Srinagar airport was attacked by Pakistan Air Force F-86 jets from 26th Squadron PAF Base Peshawar. The Indian Air Force received news that many Pakistani fighter planes had entered the Indian border and were planning to destroy the Jammu airbase. To take on these Pakistani aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Jagjit Singh Ghuman and Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon flew. Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his display of bravery in this war. In this war he made the supreme sacrifice and attained martyrdom.
