Mann initially worked in the Electricity Board. His singing career began after officials he met at a singing program offered him a job. His first fame came in 1980, when the song “Dil Da Mamla Hai” sung by him was telecast on DD National.
On December 14, 2012, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature by the Governor at the 36th convocation of Punjabi University, Patiala. Apart from this he also won many awards. He has also received the National Film Award from the Government of India.
