Rifleman (currently Subedar Major) Sanjay Kumar is an Indian soldier and a recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour. He received this honor during the Kargil war.
Sanjay Kumar was born on March 3, 1976 in a village in Vilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. His father’s name is Durga Ram and mother’s name is Bhag Devi. Sanjay wanted to join the army since childhood. Actually, Sanjay Kumar’s uncle was in the army and had fought against Pakistan in 1965. For Sanjay Kumar, his uncle was the reason for his encouragement to join the army. He passed the matriculation examination and joined the army. However, he was rejected three times before joining the army. Before joining the army, he also worked as a taxi driver in Delhi. Joined the Indian Army in the year 1996. Sanjay Kumar was commissioned into the 13th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on July 4, 1999.

During the Kargil war, he participated in the war with his battalion. His platoon was assigned the task of capturing the flat top area of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley, in which he volunteered to be the leading scout of the attacking column. This target was achieved by his battalion and Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his gallantry.

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar volunteered to be the leading scout of the attacking column to capture the flat top area of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley on July 4, 1999. During the attack when the column came under stiff resistance due to enemy automatic fire from a Sangar and was halted, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, realizing the gravity of the situation and without regard for his personal safety, charged the enemy. In the subsequent hand-to-hand fight, he killed three infiltrators and was seriously injured. Despite his injuries, he attacked the second bunker. Completely surprised, the enemy began to flee, leaving behind a universal machine gun.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar picked up the UMG and killed the fleeing enemy. Despite bleeding profusely, he refused to leave the battlefield. The brave action taken by him inspired his comrades and they ignored the dangerous terrain and attacked the enemy and captured the Flat Top area from the enemy’s hands.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar displayed most conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and devotion to duty of an exceptionally high order in the face of the enemy.
