Subramaniam Jaishankar (S. Jaishankar) is an Indian diplomat and politician, who is currently the External Affairs Minister of India. He is working on this post since May 30, 2019. Dr. S. Jaishankar is a respected personality not only in India but in the diplomatic scene of the world.
Birth and Family
Subramaniam Jaishankar was born on January 9, 1955 in Delhi. His father was K. Subramaniam, who was an expert on Indian strategic affairs and a renowned civil servant. His mother’s name was Sulochana Jaishankar. S. Jaishankar has two brothers – Sanjay Subramaniam and Subramaniam Vijay Kumar. Sanjay Subramaniam is a famous historian and Subramaniam Vijay Kumar has been a civil servant.
Jaishankar’s first wife was Shobha Jaishankar. He died due to cancer. S. Jaishankar’s second marriage was to Japan-born Kyoko Jaishankar (Kyoko Somekawa). Kyoko and Jaishankar’s birthday falls on the same date i.e. 9 January. After marriage, Kyoko converted to Hinduism. The Jaishankar couple have three children – Dhruv, Arjun and daughter Medha. Daughter Medha is a film director in Los Angeles. Son Dhruv works in a think tank in America.
Education
He received his primary education from Air Force Central School, New Delhi. Subsequently, he graduated from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi and subsequently obtained MPhil and PhD degrees in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.

Architect of Indian foreign policy: Dr. Jaishankar
Before entering politics, Dr. Jaishankar had a long and illustrious career in diplomacy. He served as the Foreign Secretary of India from 2015 to 2018. This glorious journey of Jaishankar began in the year 1977, when he was selected in the Indian Foreign Service. Dr. S. Jaishankar is actually a 1977 batch IFS officer (Indian Foreign Service Officer).
He has held many important diplomatic posts. He was Secretary of State from 2015–18, Ambassador to the United States (2013–15), China (2009–2013), and the Czech Republic (2000–2004). He was High Commissioner to Singapore (2007–2009).
In Politics
His expertise in foreign affairs and diplomacy is highly valued throughout the world. Impressed by his expertise, he was made the Foreign Minister in the Modi cabinet. As External Affairs Minister, Jaishankar played a key role on various aspects of India’s foreign policy, representing the country at various global platforms and addressing many international issues from the Indian perspective. He is known for his astute diplomatic skills and strategic thinking in improving India’s relations with other countries and tackling complex global challenges. Most critics consider his policies realistic.
Currently, Dr. Jaishankar is the External Affairs Minister as well as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India.
