A large-scale search operation is underway to trace the terrorists responsible for a deadly attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Sunday evening. The tragic incident resulted in 10 deaths and 33 injuries. In response, security measures in the area have been significantly intensified, with the Home Ministry tasking the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with the investigation.
The attack has been claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group backed by the notorious terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba. The bus was transporting pilgrims to the Shiv Khori temple in Teryath village when it was ambushed. Intelligence sources had reportedly been monitoring the temple for the past month, suspecting a potential attack, which led to increased security in the area.
Top police officials in Jammu and Kashmir have noted that such attacks on pilgrims and yatris are unprecedented, signaling a shift in the tactics of terrorist groups who appear desperate to demonstrate their power and gain support from across the border.
Reasi’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohita Sharma, provided further details about the incident. “Initial reports suggest that terrorists fired upon the passenger bus. In an attempt to avoid the gunfire, the driver lost control of the bus, which then plunged into a gorge. Thirty-three people were injured in the incident. The rescue operation has been completed. The identities of the passengers have not been confirmed yet. They are not locals. The Shiv Khori shrine was secured, and area domination was conducted,” she told ANI.
Visuals from the site reveal a grim scene with bodies scattered along the hillside and the bus severely damaged. The incident has prompted a wave of condemnation from political leaders and public figures.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this heinous attack. We stand united against such acts of terror.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly act” and assured that those responsible will be brought to justice.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his statement, emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of all citizens. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed their sorrow and condemned the violence. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, and Ghulam Nabi Azad joined in condemning the attack and offering their condolences to the bereaved families.
The ongoing investigation by the NIA will focus on identifying and apprehending the terrorists involved. The attack highlights the continuing challenges faced in maintaining security in the region and the constant vigilance required to protect citizens and visitors from such acts of violence. As the search operation continues, the nation remains on high alert, determined to thwart any further attempts at disrupting peace and harmony.
