Indian Parliamentarian and suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna was apprehended by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) shortly after landing at Bengaluru International Airport from Germany. Airport security handed Revanna over to the SIT, who subsequently took him to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office in Bengaluru.
Revanna, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hassan, faces serious allegations of sexual assault and criminal intimidation made by a former employee at his residence. Earlier this month, his father, HD Revanna, was also arrested on charges of sexual assault and kidnapping in a case connected to the Hassan MP.
The Special Court of People’s Representatives in Bengaluru has granted the SIT six-day custody of Prajwal Revanna. Earlier today, Revanna was presented before Justice KN Shivakumar of the Special Court as the SIT sought a 14-day custody period.
The Bengaluru court has permitted Revanna’s lawyers to meet him daily between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM. The 33-year-old MP, who arrived from Munich, was transported by a team of female SIT officials in a police vehicle to the SIT office, where he spent the night. The Special Court for Public Representatives is also scheduled to hear the bail plea of both Prajwal and his mother, Bhavani Revanna, on Friday.
In a notable development, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Revanna’s grandfather, publicly stated that his grandson should face punishment if found guilty. He emphasized that Prajwal Revanna’s failure to return to India and address the allegations legally would incur the family's wrath, potentially leading to his isolation from the Gowda family. The family has already distanced themselves from Revanna following the emergence of these charges.
On May 29, the SIT arrested two prime accused in the case, Naveen Gowda and Chetan. According to officials, the arrests occurred when the suspects appeared before the High Court seeking anticipatory bail. The two men are alleged to have distributed pen drives containing obscene videos related to the case.
Prajwal Revanna’s arrest marks a significant turn in the ongoing investigation into allegations of misconduct involving prominent political figures. The case has garnered substantial media attention, reflecting the serious nature of the accusations and the public’s demand for accountability.
This latest incident adds to the series of legal challenges faced by the Revanna family, known for their political influence in Karnataka. The unfolding legal proceedings will be closely watched, as they not only impact the individuals involved but also hold broader implications for the political landscape in the region.
As the investigation progresses, the focus will remain on ensuring a thorough and impartial legal process. The SIT's actions and the court's decisions in the coming days will be crucial in determining the outcome of this high-profile case, highlighting the importance of justice and accountability in public life.
