Dehradun, May 18, 2024 – In response to an unprecedented surge in the number of pilgrims visiting the Char Dham temples, the Uttarakhand government has announced significant changes to ensure better management and security. On Thursday, officials confirmed the prohibition of VIP darshan and the imposition of a ban on videography and the creation of social media reels within a 200-meter radius of the sacred shrines.
Chief Secretary Radha Raturi communicated these new measures through a letter addressed to her counterparts in all states and Union territories. “This year, there is a continuous surge in the number of pilgrims visiting the Holy Char Dham in Uttarakhand,” Raturi noted. “For better management, we have decided not to have any ‘VIP Darshan’ till May 31, 2024.”
The decision comes in light of an overwhelming influx of devotees. The Char Dham yatra, which began on May 10, has already attracted a massive crowd. In just the first six days of the pilgrimage, 334,732 people from both India and abroad have visited the temples to offer their prayers. Registration for the yatra began on April 25, and as of Thursday evening, over 2.7 million devotees had registered for the spiritual journey.
The administration has also taken a firm stance against the misuse of social media around the holy sites. “Making reels with misleading information is a crime. If you are going for a yatra with faith, making reels near temples is wrong,” Raturi emphasized. The government will register cases against individuals caught creating misleading content or violating the new videography restrictions.

Tragically, the state reported the deaths of 11 pilgrims within the first five days of the yatra.
