Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the expansion of the state government's breakfast scheme for school children. On this occasion, he served breakfast to the school students and also sat and ate with them. He invited the elected representatives to initiate the extension of the scheme to one government primary school in their respective constituencies.
The chief minister had earlier said that the order was issued on June 7, 2023, to extend the breakfast scheme to all 31,008 government primary schools, urban and rural, in Tamil Nadu, with an aim to benefit 15.75 lakh primary students.
Already, 1.14 lakh students from classes 1 to 5 in 1,545 government primary schools are served breakfast under the Mukhyamantri Nasta Yojana. Seeing the excellent results obtained in the initial phase, the government has started expansion. The aim is to ensure that children do not come to school without food.
Launching the breakfast scheme in Madurai on September 15, 2022, Stalin quoted late Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai and M Karunanidhi to say that poverty or caste should not be a barrier to access to education.
