FIFA U-17 World Cup: After defeating Tanzania and Japan, Colombia and Spain advance to the semifinals

At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday, Colombia defeated Tanzania, a nine-member team, 3-0 in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals. The South Americans advanced to the championship semifinals with the victory after four consecutive group-stage losses, including one in 2018. Within three minutes, Colombia’s captain Linda Caicedo scored to give the team its first goal.

Thirteen minutes later, Yesica Munoz headed Cristina Motta’s left-wing cross into the back of the net.

In the 32nd minute, Colombia added to Tanzania’s agony with a penalty kick.

Spain returned to defeat Japan 2-1 in the other quarterfinal of the day, advancing to the competition semifinals.

Momoko Tanikawa’s goal in the 66th minute gave Japan the lead, but Vicky Lopez (87′ and 90 3) scored twice to seal the issue in his team’s favor.
