Cheteshwar Pujara, an expert in Indian Test cricket, has signed a contract with Sussex through the 2023 season, the County team announced Monday. Pujara, who joined Sussex last year, had a significant effect by amassing over 1000 runs in the County Championship, including three double centuries that broke the record. He concluded the season with an average of 109.4.
The right-handed batter’s incredible performance carried over to the 50-over Royal London Cup when he captained the squad in place of an injured Tom Haines and led them to the competition’s semifinals.
Pujara averaged 89.14 at a strike-right of 111.62 in his nine Royal London Cup games, with his best total of 174 off just 131 balls coming against Surrey.
“I’m happy to be joining Sussex once more in 2023. I had a great time during my final season with the squad, both on and off the field, and I’m eager to help the team advance and succeed in the upcoming season, “In a statement released by the county side, Pujara added.
We all saw the class Cheteshwar displayed with the bat and his performances, but he was also outstanding in our young dressing room as a world-class role model for them to follow, said Sussex Performance Director Keith Greenfield. “It is fantastic news that Cheteshwar will return in 2023,” Greenfield continued.
