On Wednesday, October 12, a Delhi court filed charges against Olympian Sushil Kumar and 17 others in the Chhatrasal Stadium homicide case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder, attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy.
In addition, two accused who fled the scene were also charged by the court.The Chhatrasal Stadium case led to the arrest of Kumar and co-accused Ajay Kumar on May 23 from the outlying Mundka region. Kumar is currently being held at Central Jail No. 2 of Tihar.
On the intervening night of May 4 and 5, the wrestler Dhankar and two of his pals, Sonu and Amit Kumar, were allegedly assaulted by Kumar and his companions over a property dispute. Later, Dhankar, 23, passed away from his wounds.
Sushil Kumar was the primary accuser in the initial charge sheet, which the police filed on August 2 of last year and listed 13 other defendants. The Delhi Police informed the extra sessions court that there was sufficient evidence to establish charges of murder and kidnapping against Kumar and the other defendants during the case's closing arguments on October 1.
The Delhi High Court was informed by Delhi Police, who were opposing the bail request, that the witnesses in the case were scared of him and his cronies. It claimed that one of the witnesses had actually petitioned the court for protection and argued for his bail appeal to be rejected.
At the Olympics in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London, Kumar won a bronze and a silver medal, respectively.
