Following the release of video showing the Manchester United forward appearing to slam a phone out of an Everton fan’s hand during a game last season, British police have warned Cristiano Ronaldo. Following the altercation at Goodison Park on April 9, the 37-year-old was questioned by police regarding a claim of assault and criminal damage. Following United’s 1-0 defeat, a video showing Ronaldo appearing to knock a supporter’s cellphone on the ground as he limped into the tunnel prompted Merseyside Police to open an inquiry. “We can confirm that a 37-year-old man voluntarily appeared and was interviewed under caution in relation to an accusation of assault and criminal damage,” the police force said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The complaint pertains to an incident that happened on Saturday, April 9, at Goodison Park after the football game between Everton and Manchester United.
“Conditional prudence has been used to handle the situation. The matter has now concluded.”
Ronaldo apologised on social media for his “outburst” and extended an invitation to the fan to see a match at Old Trafford “as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship” following the incident.
After the game, the Portuguese forward posted on Instagram, saying: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in challenging circumstances like the one we are facing. To be an example for all the young people who enjoy the beautiful game, we must always be respectful and patient.
As a gesture of fair play and sportsmanship, I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if it is feasible, invite this fan to witness a game at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo called the rumours concerning his future at United, which is having trouble, “false,” as they were being reported. The Portugal forward missed the team’s preseason trip to Thailand and Australia due to personal obligations while rumours about his future at Old Trafford abounded.
Ronaldo reportedly wants to play Champions League football, but United insist he is not for sale and will continue to be an important part of Erik ten Hag’s plans moving forward.
