By capturing the women’s singles title at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK, on Monday, former world champion PV Sindhu added another gold medal to her collection (8 August).
Sindhu pulled her foot off the gas when the match was poised 12-7 in her favour, which allowed the Canadian to close the gap and overtake her. However, the Indian’s instincts for survival kicked in, and she never allowed Li to get closer than 4 points from her.
The badminton pro started her Commonwealth Games campaign with a 2-0 victory over Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzak in the round of 32.To win her first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in women’s singles, two-time Olympian PV Sindhu defeated Canada’s 2014 CWG winner Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13.
She continued her winning streak in the next round, defeating Husina Kobugabe of Uganda after taking two games to zero advantage.
The shuttler from Andhra Pradesh won the match with a score of 21-13, much to the pleasure of the Indian crowd in Birmingham who had come to see her win gold in the friendly games in 2022. In order to win the highly sought-after championship, Sindhu only needed to score 7 points in the championship round.
Now that the BWF World Championships 2022 are set to begin on August 21 in Tokyo, PV Sindhu will get ready for them.
