Sunita Williams, a celebrated astronaut with Indian roots, is gearing up for her third space voyage aboard the Boeing Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner spacecraft. Scheduled initially for May 7, 2024, her mission encountered a minor setback, pushing the launch by at least 24 hours due to technical glitches.
At the age of 58, Williams brings a wealth of experience from her previous space expeditions. Her inaugural spaceflight took off on December 9, 2006, and concluded on June 22, 2007. During this mission, she etched her name in the annals of space history by performing four spacewalks, setting a remarkable record with a cumulative spacewalk duration of 29 hours and 17 minutes. Her second journey commenced on July 14, 2012, and concluded on November 18, 2012, adding another 127 days to her total time spent in space. Collectively, Williams has logged an impressive 322 days orbiting the Earth, contributing significantly to humanity’s quest for space exploration.
In a recent interview with NDTV, Williams offered insight into her upcoming mission, revealing her intention to carry a ‘lucky charm’ to space—an idol of Lord Ganesha. According to her, this sacred idol symbolizes her belief in good fortune. In previous missions, Williams has also brought along the Bhagavad Gita, underscoring her deep spiritual and cultural connections.
However, just hours before the scheduled liftoff, an unforeseen obstacle emerged, causing a delay in the mission. The launch was postponed due to a technical snag related to a valve in the second stage of the Atlas rocket, as announced during a live NASA webcast. This setback occurred while Williams and her fellow crew members were already strapped into their seats within the spacecraft, underscoring the unpredictability of space exploration.
Despite the temporary setback, the anticipation surrounding Williams’ upcoming mission remains palpable, both among her admirers and the scientific community.
