According to the semi-official Tasnim, Iran detained the daughter of a former president on Tuesday night for "inciting rioters." This is the latest sign that prominent Iranians are supporting the protesters and the government's crackdown on them.
The report was silent on Faezeh Hashemi's involvement in the unrest that has rocked Iran since September 16. Celebrities' condemnation of the murder of Mahsa Amini, 22, who passed away after being detained by so-called morality police for her attire, has sparked unprecedented public support for protests.
Hashemi, a former member of parliament who dons the lengthy Islamic headdress known as the chador, is the daughter of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a co-founder of the Islamic Republic and two-term president who passed away in 2017.
She and the government have previously clashed over policies; she was detained following protests in 2009 and indicted this year on counts of sacrilege and acting against the government following claims that she had insulted the Prophet Muhammad. According to the most recent official statistics, which were made public on Saturday, there were 41 fatalities as a result of the violence. The killing of 76 demonstrators had been verified, according to Iran Human Rights, a group with offices in Oslo.
