Even as Tehran authorities have moved to include Chabahar port in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), people with knowledge of the situation said that Iranian shipping companies intend to set up a regular service between Bandar Abbas port and two ports in India to handle cargo anticipated to be shipped from Russia.
The frequency can be increased to handle the cargo the Russian side intends to ship via INSTC. The regular service between Bandar Abbas port in southern Iran and the Kandla and Nhava Sheva ports on India’s west coast is anticipated to be operated every 10 to 14 days or so.
The service is anticipated to be operational within a few weeks, and Iranian businesses have taken steps to facilitate handling.
A number of factors, including the Russian side’s push to use the hall in the face of crippling Western sanctions, Iran’s willingness to serve as a transit route to increase commerce, and the Reserve Bank of India’s decision on July 11 to permit funding and settlement of exports, have contributed to the renewed focus on INSTC, which was established more than twenty years ago.
