Ahead of a potential meeting between President Xi Jinping and US Vice President Joe Biden at a global summit in November, Chinese state media reported on Thursday that President Xi Jinping has stated that China is willing to work with the US to find the “right way to get along with each other in the new era.”

“China stands ready to work with the US to find the right way to get along with each other in the new era on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, which will benefit not only the two countries but also the whole world” Chinese state media cited Xi as saying in an address delivered to a gathering on Wednesday organised by the National Committee on US-China Relations (NCUSCR).

Washington and Beijing have been at odds on a number of topics, including Taiwan and China’s steadfast support for Russia throughout its invasion of Ukraine.

Differences between Beijing and Washington have spread to the field of international geopolitics, where, generally speaking, China and Russia are seen as a bloc competing with US-led Western countries.

Xi expressed his hope that the NCUSCR will continue to take an active part in assisting the re-establishment of healthy and stable bilateral relations. After being elected to a record-breaking third term as the head of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) earlier this week, the message was Xi’s first outreach to the US and Biden.

In a meeting with his top military advisers on Wednesday, Biden reportedly stated that the US does not seek conflict with China and that Chinese President Xi Jinping is aware of this. Since Biden entered office in January of last year, the two have communicated over the phone and online but have never met in person.

There has been no official word on the likelihood of a meeting between the two leaders, who are anticipated to attend the G20 conference in Bali, Indonesia, in November.
